<lj:music>Skullcrusher Mountain (apparently)</lj:music>

OK I don't post here often but I had a fucked up dream, and I still remember some of it ( though I know there was more that I lost while waking up ) so Im tossing it up here...

SO Im at what I know to be my house, its a cabin with big glass windows on a lake, wall benches, shelves and shelves of books and a desk... I wana say it was the Den from the set up.. and it felt really well lived in.

In walks Harvey Keitel,( as he looked in Reservoir Dogs ) he has a gun, and im there in my PJ's ( the scoobie doo PJ pants ) and we start talking, I wana say we were working out a deal for something or another I know money was involved and I know that Harvey's position was that someone had to be shot... so in the end, I agreed to let him shoot me, I got on my knees and he shot me in the chest, which I imediately regreted, we exchanged our good by's and he left...I decided then that I didn't wana just lay about and die and started to bandage myself up...

Then I woke up. Now I have frankly no idea what the hell I was thinking of when I went to bed to inspire such a fucked up dream, but here is the weirdest part.... the whole time we were talking, hell for the entire dream the Music for "SkullCrusher Mountain" was playing... though Harvey did not seem to notice, when he left it was at the line "isan't it enought to know that I ruined a Pony making a gift for you?" ...

ICC Thoughts.

Well ICC for me was a mixed bag, first let me say that it was clear very very clear that the staff put forward a tremendous effort to show us all a good time, their work was apparent the settings were very nice ( especially changeling ) the plots seemed well constructed and pre-planed...especially the possession thing, < we are only now seeing the tip of that iceberg folks >

But my weekend at ICC was viewed through the filter of a guy who shortly before departure from Va, ate something which was completely offended by a surprise trip to Detroit and turned my insides into a dual headed sprinkler system. if you bounced up to me this weekend for a surprise hug, and saw a panic'd look on my face and I shortly afterwords excused myself It was not you!... trust I felt like crap and was fleeing to avert disaster.

Things I liked...

Charity record was totally smashed, we only had 600 folks but raised a stupid amount of charity money... Go Guyz!...

Hanging out with people, I didn't get to spend long stretches with folks and I tended to keep my distance, but I still got to see my peeps. Much good conversation.

Travel, other than the trip to and from the airport IN Detroit, travel was a breeze, the good news is that ya know with Detroit getting ICC, DC no longer has a damn excuse about our airports being too far away... ICC in DC would roxxors..

Game, I had an Alright time, not great but alright, not that it was the ST's fault, I felt like fuck pie and was not in RP condition... Nyquil and Pepto are the Mind killers....

Things I did not like...

The hotel was too nice, I know its a fucked up thing to say, but It was a bit upscale for us I felt, it was very nice, but I felt like the staff was eying me, and everyone else all weekend, it just didn't "Feel" like a good fit. The restaurant at the hotel was very pricey, Though the Food was excellent.

I missed Sabbat due to being ill, this filled me with great sadness I heard such great things about the game, I loved sabbat and it looked like it was to be the bomb... /emo

Plot, Now this one I want to be clear on, I Dodged plot hardcore this weekend, I wasnt feeling well and my last few encounters with "plot" have left me with that chafed and splintered feeling so I decided I was taking this ICC off from plot as much as possible. I of course failed, a symptom of the "Lau Lau" effect, but I had a couple difficulties with the plot:

the first was the ascendancy war thing.
WTF is the point of a conditional covenant benefit for wining the Bidding war?... This did not effect me, but if I spent money on this thing, and didn't have coil of blood I would have been Fuckin Pissed, the same as an Invictus who is told after wining the bidding that if he hasn't completed the Tenure plot kit he cant get his covenants bennies either... this was a bad decision, I cant think of any justification for it.

Second, and on this one I could be wrong, As I understand it this was caused by a communication issue... Some of the ST's/Narrators told OD that their coils would not work to fight off the frenzy that hit the ballroom... Now again this frenzy would never have hit me, it was targeted at PC's who filled one of the following ; BP 7 + / humanity 3 or lower/ has killed someone Here...
Now when I talked with Lee Ann, she said that she never said that coils didn't work...

My final word on the idea of plot kits that remove coils is that they suck. to a one, Coils are permanent changes, Dragons already get hosed constantly by ST's not running frenzy on others, allowing other covenants to avoid the problems of High Bp with lame tricks ( which cost way less than coils ) and in general discounting the usefulness of coils. To then turn and say here is a problem you spent a ton of Xp getting to avoid or mitigate but hey I'm just not going to let you, but this other guy with a cheap way to do so can do it without any issues... well it just sets my brain on fire. I truly hope that such communication issues are worked on in the future, and that plot kits to remove permanent changes are no longer run...
( in fact I am very much against plot kits that say hey ya know what I don't care whats on your sheet, you cant effect this result ... If I wanted to ride a train I'd watch TV. )

Summary:

Tim Edwards from the UK made a comment in the QnA about the tendency of cammies to think that a guy is a dick the further away from you he is... I had a short chat with him and added one addendum, Cause I totally agree the further away a guy is the more likely a cammie is to think "that guy" is a dick, a cheat, a liar, playing under a protectionist ST, etc etc etc....
I said yeah Tim, that may be true but for the most part the reason I think that guy is a dick is because he has acted that way, or someone local to him has said "what a cocksucker this guy is, let me tell you of his exploits and how he fucked me".

I guess the sum total is, like my illness, we bring most of this on ourselves, we can have fun, regardless of the "rules" if we set our mind to it, if we say hey I don't have to get my way, I just have to get a Cool Story for one and all. And to be clear folks, a cool story has a beginning, a middle and the one we neglect most often an END.

Recently we have been talking locally about what we like and don't like about game. At some point the discussion turned to what folks from outside DC thought of the DC game, Now I am a newcomer to the DC game, I still have ties to other games My fingers are rather deep in some pies, and I'm getting a taste of others... Anyway Wade made this post to the DC list.. and I thought It should be shared with the world.

Subject: [d-dc] World of Slightly Overcast

"Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you..." -- Nirvana

I honestly have to laugh about DC being the World of Slightly Overcast. To those who would actually say it to my face, I'll tell them, flat out, in a word...Bullshit.

DC is an incredibly dangerous place to play your PC, but the dangers are not readily apparent. Whereas some domains have their dangers right up front, with the problems in your face, and PC vs. PC physical conflict is a nearly nightly happening, DC's dangers are under the surface, and one wrong turn of phrase, one wrong word, one little insult overheard or said carelessly *can* get your PC stuffed in a box for all eternity, if not outright killed.

So, where some domains look more like a firefight, with the enemy in a place you can see and can probably get to him, DC is different...it is a minefield. To me, a minefield is more dangerous than a firefight, because you can just run away from it. With a minefield, any step in any direction could be fatal.

Let's examine how dangerous DC really is. I'll start with my character.

Aroex is not a combat character. He is a social predator with some nifty extras that make him middlin' dangerous in a physical confrontation, but not deadly. So where does he get his strength and therefore why is he dangerous? In no particular order...

1. He is the head of a powerful lineage containing vampires from many covenants. Do something too bad to him and you risk bringing down their wrath in return. The de la Cruz are becoming fairly well known, and we're fielding something like a half dozen requests from PCs around the country (and a couple from outside) to join it.

2. His direct progeny is the Prince. The previous Prince was also his direct progeny. He was Seneschal the previous one and remains Seneshcal to this one. That likely tells you something (though if it makes you think that he directly tells them what to do, you'd be wrong...influence, persuasion, guidance, and "fatherly concern" are his tools for getting his way with his progeny, and he has to balance that with what is possible to get from them so as not to break the family unity).

3. He is one of five Covenant Status x5 members in the Lancea Sanctum. One of the other five is his direct progeny as well, Mackenzie DuMont de la Cruz. That gives him enormous influence over the Lancea Sanctum both in the local area and far afield. As Aroex, I have deliberately cultivated alliances with LS around the world, so that if I want something done in another city, I know who to contact. This in turn has resulted in bringing some things back to the local game, such as a small tiff with Aimnestos. In the region, he's been anointing a lot of new Bishops of late, helping to solve the dispute between some LS members in Richmond, as well as Hampton Roads. He is appointing Legates, which are personal messengers, in a few of the cities around the region...yet another way of extending his eyes, ears, and hand. The recent events regarding Florida are a good example of all that.

4. Yep, it's true, and I'll even say this in an OOC context...he's building a network of spies and agents throughout his own covenant and some others as well. Not one of them is a de la Cruz, either. But it is funny how stuff you hear from these agents abroad often relates to one of the local PCs of another covenant...often due to their ties of clan-lineage and their coteries.

5. I belong to what amounts to four coteries: the Curia Cruentus (LS leadership), the de la Cruz (lineage), his personal LS coterie (spies and the like), and another which I can't name, but is very motivated towards a particular cause. Each of these provides a web of ties to other clans and covenants that, if attempted in visual form as a diagram, would look like a plate of spaghetti. Pull on one string too hard, and five others go taut. It's a hell of a balance act to play.

What does this all mean? It means I receive information from abroad and apply it to the very subtle maneuverings against other players locally. It means I watch and listen to what happens locally and apply it to my subtle maneuverings abroad. Each one feeds the other.

Now...all of the above, if I called in every favor I had and nearly prostituted myself to get as much force as powerful, could be reason enough to call in a whole bunch of LS and a few others to do something very violent if necessary. It might take a little time, but it could be done. Others would notice it and do it too. DC would become nothing more than a battlefield if this was done...and everyone would lose. That's why you only do it if you have nothing left to lose.

...and because everyone else with similar capability realizes that, and that the battle might happen even if I had died (the "revenge" factor), everyone works to make sure that nobody with this power is put in the position of having nothing left to lose. Ever. Because we'd all lose.

And that's just my PC. Shall we consider, very, very briefly, some of the others:

1. Any number of super-secret and highly connected coteries.

2. Individuals who are among the top echelons, and in some cases at the top echelong, in their covenant's leadership...not just the LS, but the Invictus, Ordo and Crones too, at least...maybe even the Carthians...not to mention the newly found unity of Clan Gangrel and individuals here who were instrumental in making that happen.

3. People making their own networks of lineage, spies, etc. How many "family" lineages are there in this game? I can think of two other major ones other than the DLC right off the top of my head.

You think this is just overcast? It's dark as hell, folks...every step is fraught with danger. One wrong, stupid, ill-considered word at any game, anywhere, may make it back to us. One such word at one of our games will make it back to someone...either one of the "big shots" or one of their agents.

Frankly, in this town, if you aren't someone's agent already, you're just waiting for your number to be called as cannon fodder. If you aren't a big shot, or don't want to be a big shot, you should be doing everything you can to make yourself priceless in value to one (or more, even better) of the "big shots." Because if they value you, they will make efforts to save your life if you get in a jam.

For my own part...I don't like 10 o'clock monster plots; I hate this combat system. I don't like the "exploring your humanity" plots; I'm not a real fan of trying to base morality off of a 10-slot chart. I don't go looking for magic items; if I wanted that, I'd play D&D. In this venue, I'm not looking for "action"; I'll get that in Forsaken or even Awakening, thanks.

This game is about politics for me. Who knows whom. Who said what. Who is doing what. How much power can I accrue while not pissing off those around me, especially those I count on to maintain that power. Playing with words in such a highly charged social scene is like juggling hand grenades. Fumble your juggling act, and the whole room goes "boom." You can sometimes literally feel the tension in the air when this is the case. The wrong word could start a fight, here or elsewhere, that would result in dozens of PC deaths. That is much more dangerous than pulling your sword and trying to hack another PC to death.

World of Slightly Overcast...ha! Bullshit. Darkness is not about blood and death and murder. That's not Darkness, it is jut gore. Darkness is about how many times you compromise your moral values to maintain a desperate grip on power so that you aren't the one left behind for the chasing wolves to devour. Darkness is about how many ways you can pimp yourself and your skills to the highest bidder, to seek their protection. Darkness is about the threat, not the culmination of the threat. Darkness is about the atmosphere being so tense, that you can literally have a "fatal turn of phrase," and trying to live and thrive in such an atmosphere.

It's all poisonous. It is slow, insidious, and degrades you over time. The only question is...how long can you fight the poison before you have to give in to it?

**Wade Racine

How to write a character history... Crosspost..

This recently hit the Richmond OOC list and I thought It was good enough to post here... great info something folks should at least takea read through.. every little bit helps after all.
=============================================================
Heya folx,

So a guy I used to play with in the Pittsburgh Camarilla Chapter wrote this
recently and posted it. I take absolutely no credit for it whatsoever.
It's a very decent guide to making a character rather than a character
sheet. In my life as a roleplayer, I've often broken one or more of the
rules below, and I generally regret it after "getting into" the character.
If you don't have a thoroughly fleshed-out background for your
character...try using this to think about where you want to go with a
character.

Cheers,
Adam Warman
US2002022774

******************************
How to Write a Character Background

"Interactive improvisational theatre": that's what we call it
while we're trying to not sound like ubergeeks when we talk about our
larps out in the real world. But it's not an entirely untrue
characterization, and if it were more true, the game certainly wouldn't
suffer from it. Strip away the XP, the stats, all the numbers and
mechanics, and ask yourself this fundamental question: would anyone want
to read a book (or watch a movie) about what happens at your game?
About your character?

Larp isn't a board game -- the goal isn't to win by having the
most points at the end, because there are no points or ends, and no way
to win -- and it isn't even like some other RPGs -- the goal isn't to
adventure as a team to defeat the big bad and rescue the innocent,
because there are no big bads or innocents, and no adventures.
Actually, there's nothing at all in this little game, nothing at all,
except the characters. The characters ARE the story; the characters ARE
the game. If the characters are flat, then the story is flat and the
game is flat.

Let's make a compelling story, one that would be worth reading
the novelization of. Let's make some interesting characters. Below are
ten guidelines -- rules of thumb, some pitfalls to avoid -- to help give
you a leg up on writing your character's background. Some of them list
"red flags" that you can look for in your character to get a quick idea
of what might be a good idea to change, some present alternate
possibilities that just might not have occured to you.

Rule #1: Have Parents

More imporantly, have a childhood. Psychologists tell us that
small events early in life can have a tremendous effect on someone's
personality as an adult; the same goes for your character. Ask yourself
all the "little kid" questions. Who were your role models? How did
your parents meet? Did you grow up rich or poor? Were you picked on as
a child, or were you the bully?

Red flags at this point: no last name, orphaned at a young age,
raised by a super-naturally oriented organization, having become the
best-of-the-best at anything (particularly if before the early teens),
amnesia or other selective memory loss, or having more than half your
background focused on after your metamorphosis to a supernatural
creature. The begining is important, and leaving it undefined is an
invitation to be boring.

Rule #2: Hit the High Points

Speaking of the metamorphosis, be sure to talk about that, as it
should have had a profound effect on the character; you should know
where you were, what you were doing, who your sire was and (this one
gets ignored surprisingly often) why they embraced you. But
transformation isn't the only one. Did your character ever fall in
love? Find (or lose) religion? Betray, or be betrayed by, a friend?
There aren't any dots on your sheet for "emotional impact," but don't
let that stop you; these facets are more important than any dot you'll
ever earn.

Red flags here: only talking about education and careers (read:
justifying skill point expenditures), or only talking about friends and
associates (read: justifying dots of allies and contacts or membership
in a specific sub-group like a bloodline). Yes, those things are
important too, but they don't tell a story. They don't tell WHY.
Additionally, for vampires: being embraced out of the blue, or "because
I was the best [whatever]er in the world," or by someone your character
didn't know before the embrace or hasn't interacted with since the
embrace.

Rule #3: The Y^3 Rule

"If every vampire who said he was at the crucifixion was actually there,
it would have been like Woodstock." -- Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Everyone likes to be special. Everyone wants to be "that guy",
the one-in-a-million exception to the rule. The hero of the story. In
a game of 30 people (not to mention the 5,000 members of the Camarilla
outside the local venue), that's... problematic. Let's say, for
example, you want to be the best kung-fu fighter the world has ever
seen. It's really easy; strength 5, brawl 5, kung-fu 5... you can do
that and still have enough points left to get a PhD in nuclear physics.
So can everyone else. (This should illustrate how the dots don't make
the character.) This fails to make an interesting character because it
has no reason; it's just dots. But what's a good reason? That's where
Y^3, or "Why, cubed", comes in; it will quickly turn a
rules/mechanical/out-of-charcter desire into a story about your
character. Just ask yourself the question "why?", three times. Why are
you the world's best kung-fu fighter? Because you trained for years in
a secret mountain dojo. Why? Because you feel an overwhelming desire
to avenge the death of your parents by becoming a vigilante. Why?
Because my parents were brutally murdered by a sociopath who is now my
arch-nemesis. Anyone can max out their stats, but no one will answer
the same way as you to Y^3; congratulations, now you actually are
special.

Red Flags: having any particular diepool maxed out. Having more
4 and 5 dot abilities/merits than 1s and 2s. Having a 1 in any
attribute. If you notice any of these, ask youself "Why?"

Rule #4: Do Some Research

It is popular to make a character who starts the game by having
just moved into the city from far away, or who has just awoken from
torpor from the distant (or not so distant) past. It is strongly
advised that you read up on where and when your character has been. For
example, if you want to have been in Pittsburgh in the mid 1800s, you
should go look up when Fort Duquesne was built, when it was destroyed,
and the two times when George Washington tried to attack it. These are
major political and social events of that time and place, and if you're
going to provide ANY believability to your representation of your
character, you, as a player, should know the facts. Wikipedia makes
this easy (www.wikipedia.org). More than this, your character should
have opinions on those issues. Otherwise, what's the point? You can
have been embraced yesterday and still not have an opinion, why be old
if you're not going to do anything with it? How can you pretend to be
from a foreign land if you don't know anything about it?

Red flags: lack of dates, or vague dates, in character
background, or mention of events without mention of character's thoughts
and feelings on them. Repeated use of the "forgot while in torpor"
card.

Rule #5. Have Flaws

The new World of Darkness has an interesting take on flaws which
is a big departure from the rules used in the last chronicle. That's
not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about deficiencies of
character. Self-hatred. Bigotry. Blind love. The Vice system is, to
be blunt, pathetic; so it's up to you to make your character more
interesting in this regard. Let your character have failed. Let them
have made stupid choices. Let them feel pain, and loss, and fear, and
anger. Let them suffer. It's what interesting characters do. And not
just altruistic, martyrous heroes! Well written villians go through
these too. Trust me, 10 years of pain adds more to a character's story
than two millenia of always getting what they wanted.

Red flags for #5: great age, having left all the enemies of your
past dead behind you, having left all of your loved ones dead behind
you, having never been in love, having no goals because you've already
accomplished them.

Rule #6: Leave Hooks

I have often heard the complaint that it's difficult to first
get involved in the game. Another, seemingly unrelated complaint, is
that the plotlines being run aren't compeling to someone's character.
Both of these problems can be addressed by leaving a few good hooks in
your character's background that other characters can be hung off of.
Rather than letting your historical nemesis die, let them get away, or
at least a close ally of theirs. Leave some surviving descendants, or
former friends, or lovers, or times and places you may have indulged in
creating a childe. And point them out when you send your background to
your ST. "...but Smith escaped. (open hook)" Like that. (Conversly, if
it's someone else's PC, note that too. "...where Jones embraced a young
executive. (played by J. Johnson)") By leaving hooks, you make it easier
for storytellers to write plots tailored to your character, or for new
players to get an "in" at the start of the game. And you only need two
or three.

Rule #7: Use Cliches with Care, or, You Are Not Your Clever Accent

"The only idea more overused than serial killers is multiple
personality." -- Charlie Kaufman, Adaptation

Cliches are like spices. Used sparingly, they enhance the
flavor, but use to much and the food is unpalatable. A unique piece of
costuming, a foreign accent, the inability to use contractions; they can
help make a character a bit more memorable. If you let your cliches
define you though, you end up with a caricature, not a character.
You'll run into the same failings if you try to base your character too
closely on an existing literary character. It's not just against
Camarilla policy to allow players to play characters based on historical
or litterary characters; it's a bad idea! Doing so, like relying on a
cliche, will ultimately detract from your character's personality. It's
a shortcut that should be avoided. Borrow, liberally even, but do not
copy directly. If you must, try mixing the personality traits of two or
three characters that interest you.

Red Flags: when asked to describe your character you reply with
"Did you ever see the movie...?"

Rule #8: There's No Place Like Home

It always imprsseses me the percentage of characters in any
venue that aren't local. Everyone wants to be from someplace, anyplace,
more exotic then wherever it is they are. Consider for a moment having
been born here, or having been embraced here. It's not so bad, and it
gives your character a real reason to be here, and makes it easy to have
local NPCs be involved with your character. You don't have to do it,
but not enough players do. Just consider it.

Rule #9: Be Passionate About Something

Story is about conflict. Not necessarily swords-and-guns, but
it all comes about from characters desiring mutually exclusive outcomes.
If everyone gets everything they want, it isn't a story. Don't be
afraid to be passionate; I promise it won't get your character killed.
Okay, that's a lie... but if they die, you'll feel good about it. Know
how you want your character's story to end, because it will end,
eventually. It can either end with you getting bored with the character
and retiring them, or it can end because you were playing them with
passion; which sounds like more fun?

Rule #10: Talk to Your Storyteller

They know more about all the other PCs in the game then anyone
else. They've helped make more characters than you can guess. They're
the one you expect to write plot tailored just for you. Grab them, and
talk to them, for at least an hour about your character. Preferably
face to face, but a phone call, series of emails, or some time instant
messaging is also good. Showing up with a completed character sheet ten
minutes before you go into game for the first time should be avoided;
even if you have a great character, it can still fall flat if it doesn't
mesh with the rest of the game.

ya know there are times when I am not so happy about my Redneck past, recently I have had several computer issues that have frankly stumped me for a bit... but in the end after much aggravation I powered through, and I know that some of these problems are stuff that my more techie friends would smile and fix while chatting about cam stuff or Tv or music depending on which techie friend...
However there are then days like today, when my Redneck past shines and I am rather happy and can sit about feeling accomplished... lately my brakes have been acting up on the Sportage, I blew it off as a lower priority until it started grinding... then decide that I should do something about it... so because I haven't really done a lot of mechanical work since I broke my back falling off of that water buffalo, I called a mechanic that Canuckdez recommended, a guy I have used in the past as well... the quote "300$" needless to say I was not real happy with the quote so I called around and priced the parts... 70$ ( plus another 30 in necessary tools and equipment) the 200 dollar difference convinced me that I would break out the coveralls and do the damn repair myself... net result... I started at 8:40 this morning by 10:20 my breaks are done save bleeding them which I will do when Shamus gets home to I can have him pump the breaks for me...
Ok,
So I took the Plunge, and picked up an Ipod, what a Nifty little peice of work it is... Super cool so I downloaded all my Music to the Ipod and still have a bunch of room left over, I picked up an Itune card and a few songs so far... all and all found some great stuff, but I am surfing against a sea of music, Having read Nash's review of American Idiot I picked it up and am totally enjoying it... but I thought I would try something along the lines of a MeMe

So...

For the New Ipod post a Song or artist you think I should check out...
I will reply with one I think you should in turn check out...

Just to dial folks in on my musical taste... I am something of a freak..I like Rock, Alternative, Rap, Country, I rather love comedy especially parodies... In general I'm pretty open... My musical collection includes everything from AFI to Roy Clark to the Geto Boys to the Capitol Steps... and a hell of a lot in between.
